A Fun Halloween Collaborative Poster for Upper Elementary

By Marianna Monheim – Updated October 10th, 2024

Halloween is one of the most exciting times of the year for students, but it can also be one of the most chaotic for teachers. A Halloween collaborative poster project offers a perfect solution to channel all that excitement into something productive. Whether used as a centerpiece for your classroom party or as a week-long activity where students work on their parts independently, this creative project helps maintain classroom structure. By breaking the poster into manageable tasks, students stay focused, engaged, and entertained—without the usual holiday chaos!

Why a Halloween Collaborative Poster Is the Perfect Classroom Activity

Just the promise of an evening of nonstop candy can hype up our upper elementary friends to out-of-this-world levels! Rather than give into the Halloween excitement that can make classroom management tricky, try an activity like a collaborative poster to add more structure during the days leading up to the big event. You can use the poster as a fun party activity or have students complete their part of the poster during their independent work for the week.

Setting Up a Halloween Collaborative Poster Activity for Your Upper Elementary Students

student directions for halloween collaborative poster

What’s the best way for students to complete a collaborative poster? Well, that depends a lot on your class. No matter how students complete their part of the poster, however, make sure to discuss your expectations as a whole group before they start working. For my collaborative poster activities, I include the directions on the page for future reference (and I couldn’t resist throwing a quick vocab lesson in as well!)

Clear Guidelines for Poster Completion
Some things you may want to consider are:

  • Rules for white space (fill with colors or patterns).
  • Sticking with a color scheme (greens, purples, and oranges will make that Halloween poster pop!)
  • Neat coloring – yes, even our upper elementary pals may need a refresher lessons on coloring in one direction or how much pressure to apply in order to create a product everyone will be proud to display.
This activity includes sutdent directions on every page.

Assembling the Halloween Collaborative Poster with Your Students

Once students have completed their individual sections, it’s time to bring everything together. Start by designating a large space, such as a bulletin board or classroom wall, where the poster will be displayed. Encourage students to collaborate on arranging their contributions, discussing how the pieces fit together to create a cohesive Halloween-themed poster. This final stage not only allows students to take pride in their work but also emphasizes the importance of teamwork as they transform individual efforts into a unified project that the entire class can enjoy.

Pro tip: before students cut out their poster piece, have them write the piece # on the back. This will make it easier to assemble. You may also wish to display an example of a completed poster to help students put the pieces in order.
