     2D shapes are all around us, and picture books are a fantastic way for students to learn all about them! These five books about 2D shapes will be great additions to your classroom library.

     Shapes are a fun topic to teach, and these 5 books do a fantastic job of bringing shapes to life with creativity, humor, and even a little poetry! Any of the following books would be a great addition to your 2D shape unit. I always love starting a unit with a picture book to get my students interested in the topic. You can even add these books to your classroom library for students to read over and over again!

Circle Rolls

I love picture books with minimalist illustrations. They show learners that art doesn’t have to be incredibly complex in order to have meaning! Your students will love following Circle as she rolls through the story, causing havoc with other shapes along the way. This is a great one to reinforce all the new 2D shape vocabulary you’re teaching!

Triangle (Shape Trilogy)

Find me a child who won’t be drawn to the cover of this book, I dare you! All kidding aside, your students are going to want to read all 3 stories in this trilogy about shapes filled with mischief. Content alert: some reviewers were concerned that the actions of the shapes were setting a bad example- but for me, that just means a great opportunity to discuss right and wrong behaviors!

Shape Me A Rhyme

Nature, shapes, and poetry- does it get any better? This book may inspire you to create shape poems with your students as part of your 2D shape unit. Students will be drawn in by the enchanting photographs and delighted to see how author Jane Yolen creates poems for each shape. This is a must-own!

Love, Triangle

This one might be my favorite! Circle and Square have been BFFs for a while, but everything changes when Triangle enters as the new shape in class. Not only is there fun wordplay for kids and adults alike, but there are also lessons to be learned about friendship! What more could you want in a book about 2D shapes?

Shape Shift

This book would be a wonderful way to introduce comparing and composing shapes. The illustrations are filled with shapes, so you may want to share this one more than once, or add it to your class library so that students can keep looking for shapes on their own!
